Los Angeles Surf Forecast - Weekend Waves - 2/27-2/28/2010

Make sure to read the full region forecast it has more complete details on the incoming swell and regional conditions. Click here for the full forecast www.socalsurf.com.

Saturday starts of slow and breezy thanks to the new storm front pushing through the region and most leftover swell in the water through the early part of the day. Really it will probably be a better morning to surf the pillow for a little longer. Expect S-SW winds 10-15 knots with some 20-25 knot gusts and more rain/thunderstorms and other nonsense.

By Saturday afternoon a new W-NW swell (275-300) starts to arrive and come up fast…though conditions still look pretty crappy. I expect that the average WNW-NW facing spots will be in the shoulder-head high+ range by the end of the day…standout NW facing spots will have more consistent overhead and overhead+ sets.

Sunday the W-NW’er will peak and winds will back down shifting more to the WNW-NW and holding around 10-15 knots for the morning. The surf will be solid in the head high to overhead+ range for most of the average spots (and the good spots in North County) and sets going a few feet overhead to nearly double-overhead and bigger at the WNW-NW facing standouts. The tide is still pretty high in the morning but there will be a lot of energy rolling around and it will have a good shot at breaking through the extra water. Even with the winds there should be enough waves and swell that the more protected breaks will work and will probably be cleaner since they don’t have as much exposure to the wind and chunkiness of the swell.

WNW-NW swell (280-300) and a bit of background SW swell will hold on Friday but lose a little off the top as the swell backs down slightly. Look for the average spots in North County to hold around knee-waist high with some chest-shoulder high sets at the better WNW-NW facing breaks.

South Bay spots will be in the chest-head high range with sets going overhead at the average WNW-NW spots. Standout NW breaks will be consistently shoulder-overhead with sets going a couple of feet overhead once the tide balances out a bit. Watch the high morning tide around sunrise.

Winds will be light and variable through the morning. Look for building S-SE winds to fill in around midday and then continuing to strengthen by the afternoon/evening. It looks like the heavy winds and rain will push in late after midnight and hold through Saturday.

New WNW-NW swell (280-300) and a bit of background SW swell move in and peak on Thursday.

Watch the high morning tide around sunrise…it could swamp out things in a few areas.

Winds/Weather not looking great tomorrow but it does look like it might be semi-manageable in the morning. General forecasts are calling for light/variable to a variable/westerly onshore flow around 10-knots in the morning. Hopefully this means that we will see cleaner conditions around dawn and then slowly building WNW-NW winds for midday into the afternoon, but keep in mind that there might be some texture/bump showing at a few areas. Look for NW winds 10-15+ knots on tap by the afternoon.

Mostly holding leftover WNW-NW swell and some weak SW energy on tap for Wednesday. An early morning high tide will keep things slow and low through the first few hours of the day but we will see some faster more playful sections setting up as the tide drops out. North County spots can expect surf in the knee-waist high range. The standout South Bay breaks will be more in the waist-chest high range with some inconsistent shoulder high sets at the standout breaks. Look for a bit of increase in size and consistency late in the day but don’t count on conditions holding together.

Clean conditions on tap for the morning with mostly light offshore winds for the county and a few pockets of light and variable flow at the more protected spots. Look for SW-W winds around 10-15 knots by the afternoon. Increasing clouds and a chance for rain late in the day.

Mix of fading WNW-NW swell and some background SW swell will be on tap for Tuesday. Most North County spots will be in the knee high range with some waist-chest high sets at the standout winter spots.

South Bay breaks will be more in the waist-chest high+ range at the average spots while the standout NW facing breaks see some chest-shoulder high+ sets on the lower tides.

Clean conditions on tap for the morning with mostly light offshore winds for the county and a few pockets of light and variable flow at the more protected spots. Look for WNW-NW winds 10-14 knots for the afternoon.

New W swell arrives on Saturday, peaking in the afternoon and then holding overnight into Sunday. Winds and weather will come along with the swell…but there may be a short pocket of cleaner conditions on tap early Saturday morning.

Sizewise we can expect the North County W facing breaks to see surf in the chest-head high range with some bigger head high+ sets showing as the swell peaks. South Bay spots will see consistent shoulder-overhead+ surf for most spots and some sets going several feet+ overhead at the standout breaks. If winds manage to hold onto the southerly flow that sets up on Friday the South Bay will likely be the best call on Saturday morning.

Saturday morning winds are forecast to be semi-onshore…but the models aren’t really all that certain. There is a chance that we will have S-SE winds early in the morning, so there may be a few pockets of cleaner conditions at the protected spots. Look for W winds 10-20+ knots to develop by Saturday afternoon and hold through most of Sunday. It will be raining both days.

Mostly weak waves on Friday morning…average spots holding around ankle-knee high with a few waist high sets sneaking into the top spots.

By the afternoon we might see a few new lines starting to sneak through but it won’t get all that big before the sun goes down. Looks like mostly waist-chest high+ surf at the South Bay standouts before dark.

Winds will be S-SE around 8-12 knots for the morning and it looks like scattered showers moving in pretty fast as well. Look for SW wind around 10-20 knots by the afternoon and periods of heavy rain.

Fading WNW-NW swell and some weak SW energy will keep a few fun waves showing at the exposed breaks on Thursday. North County spots look pretty small…mostly knee high with some waist-chest high sets at the best N. LA breaks.

South Bay spots will be more in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high sets…though the bigger waves will get less consistent as we move through the day.

Winds look good…mostly light and variable to light offshore for the morning. NW winds around 10-14 knots move in through the afternoon.

Still plenty of waves on Tuesday even though the mix of W-NW swell and background SW energy will be backing off. Average spots in North County will be in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder-head high sets at the top breaks.

The South Bay spots will average around shoulder-high to a little overhead on the sets while the standout spots still see sets going a couple of feet overhead. The surf looks fun through the morning tide push but may slow down quite a bit as the tide fills in…you may want to plan around that tide peak.

Winds look good…mostly light and variable to light offshore for the morning. NW winds around 10-14 knots move in through the afternoon.

The new W-NW swell (275-300) will peak over the weekend while some smaller SW swell (200-220) peaks through the background. Exposed North County spots can expect surf in the chest-shoulder high range with a few bigger head high+ sets showing at the standout W-WNW facing breaks. The South Bay will have surf running head high to a couple of feet overhead pretty consistently…and some bigger sets going well overhead at times. Looks pretty similar both Saturday and Sunday…but look for better surf on both days during the lower tides.

Look for N-NE winds around 10-15 knots for Saturday and Sunday mornings. Afternoon winds will turn onshore out of the WNW around 10-13 knots, but may stay manageable at the protected spots.

New W-NW swell and a new background SW swell will be filling in on Friday…but don’t expect a ton of new surf through the morning. Early on we can expect most spots to hold in the knee-waist high range with a few inconsistent chest high sets. South Bay Breaks will start more in the chest-shoulder high range on the sets. Look for more size and more consistency as the two swells fill in through the day…most breaks will be in the chest-shoulder high range by sundown…with some bigger head high possibly overhead sets showing at the South Bay standouts. Definitely expect the swell mix to peak over the weekend.

Winds look good…mostly light and variable early and then just variable winds around 10-15 knots on tap for the afternoon.

The surf continues to back down as the WNW-NW swell fades out…there will still be enough to ride but overall it looks smaller than the last couple of days. North County spots will be in the knee-high range with some inconsistent waist high+ sets showing at the better exposed combo breaks (during the low tide…and if you aren’t that tall).

South Bay breaks will be bigger…mostly waist-chest high at the average exposed spots…with a few chest-shoulder high sets at the standouts as the tide gets settled.

Winds look good…mostly light and variable to light-offshore conditions early and then just variable winds on tap for the afternoon. If the winds can stay below 10 knots for most of the day there is a shot at some clean-up near sundown.

More rain, some building onshore winds, and dropping swell won’t make for much in the way of surfable shape on Wednesday…the high morning tide isn’t going to help all that much either. Sizewise look for the average W-WNW facing spots to hold around waist-chest high…while the standout NW spots, mostly down through the South Bay, will see chest-shoulder high surf with some head high sets still showing as the tide drops.

Winds aren’t going to be super helpful but there will be some semi-clean conditions early…and there will continue to be some rain moving in throughout the morning as well. Look for light/variable to variable-onshore flow for the morning. NW winds 10-20 knots will develop through the afternoon.

Mix of W-NW energy still holding on from the weekend as well as a little reinforcing NW pulse. Most spots will see surf in the waist-shoulder high range tomorrow with some shoulder-overhead high sets showing at the top breaks through the South Bay, which also looks to have the cleanest conditions at least early on. Points and reefs will have the best shape…but good sandbars and the various structures that can break up a swell will be ok fallback places to check.

Light and variable winds early in the morning but with building W-NW winds 10-20+ knots on tap by the afternoon as the next storm front moves through. Look for more rain through the end of the day as well.

W-WNW wind/storm swell will be filling in on Saturday…coming in around chest-shoulder high for most of the average spots…and most of the top breaks in North County. The South Bay will be more in the shoulder-head high range with sets going a few feet overhead by the end of the day. Shape will be pretty torn up through most of the North Half of the County…but again the South Bay may be ok thanks to the S-SE winds that will blow through the morning…really it will end up being a race between how much the swell can build before the winds shift onshore.

Saturday winds and weather are looking a bit stormy with S-SE winds 10-15 knots showing across the county for the morning and then gusts hitting up around 20-25+ knots for the afternoon. Expect rain and possibly thunderstorms pushing throughout the day.

Sunday the WNW-NW swell and the W-WNW windswell are set to peak. Most exposed spots will be running shoulder-overhead with bigger sets mixing in. Top NW facing breaks will be a few feet overhead and possibly a little bigger at the really exposed spots.

Sunday winds shift more to the WNW around 10-15 knots for the morning and gusts nearing 20-knots for the afternoon. Drier conditions overall but not much in the way of clean surf thanks to the new, lamer, wind direction.

Not much showing for either North or South County for the morning…just some leftover WNW-NW swell that will keep the spots up north around ankle-knee high (with waist high sets) and a few chest high+ sets sneaking into the South Bay standout spots. New W-WNW storm swell will start to arrive late in the day…probably not showing too much before sunset but possibly putting a few new waves into the well exposed breaks. Winds will be out of the S-SE so many spots in the South Bay, that also happen to be exposed to the new swell mix, will be at least semi-manageable if not clean.

Winds and weather are looking a bit stormy with S-SE winds 10-15 knots showing across the county for the morning and then gusts hitting up around 20-25+ knots for the afternoon. Showers are expected to push south through the day.

North County breaks will continue to be on the smaller side on Thursday…with the average WNW facing spots along that stretch of coast seeing knee-waist high waves with some less consistent chest-shoulder high sets.

South Bay breaks will be more in the shoulder-head high range with some head high+ sets still sneaking through on the morning tide push.

Expect both regions to see smaller and less consistent surf as the swell mix fades through the afternoon.

Winds look good with mostly light and variable to light offshore flow early on. W winds 10-15 knots will build onshore in the afternoon.

WNW-NW swell peaks on Wednesday and helps drive in some new surf. Look for the average WNW facing spots to be in the waist-chest high range with some less consistent shoulder high sets. Standout South Bay breaks will be more in the chest-head high range with some overhead sets mixing in…possibly even a little bigger on the lower tides.

Expect most spots in North LA to be fairly small, particularly at the S facing spots…wave heights will likely hold in the knee to occasionally waist high range for those areas.

Winds will be light NW-NNW for the morning…mostly below 5 knots and even slightly offshore for some of the better positioned spots. WNW winds build up to the 10-15 knot range for the afternoon. Cloudy skies and a little drizzle are on tap for most of the day.

Mostly leftover WNW-NW swell and weak S-SSW swell on tap for the morning. North County spots will stay pretty small…mostly knee-waist high on inconsistent sets. It will almost feel flat for many breaks as the tide peaks. Look for South Bay breaks to be in the chest-shoulder high range…with a couple of rare bigger sets showing at the standouts.

By the afternoon the new WNW-NW swell will start to show a little energy…not a ton…but enough to get the consistency of the bigger sets to be a bit better at the standout NW breaks.

Winds look good for the morning…mostly light and variable to light ESE. Winds shift more S-SW onshore around 10-12 knots for the afternoon. Chance of light showers developing overnight into Wednesday.
