Where did the forecast go?

Hey guys…I know most of you already know where to find the forecasts now that they are over on Solspot.com…our new, much more powerful site.

But just in case some of you new visitors googled in…I wanted to make sure that you can find all of the new cool stuff. This blog isn’t updating the forecast anymore, all of that has been pushed over to the new site. Here are a few of the links that will hopefully help you find some waves (and hopefully good conditions too.)

For those of you that just wanted the forecast without any of the bells and whistles…The same ol’ Socal Forecast can be found here (this is the normal forecast for all of Southern California and generally gives you all the info you need to find surf for the next day)

Here is the link to my long-range forecasts where you can find all the details you need to plan your surf sessions for the next several days, and some even longer range outlooks that can give you a heads up on incoming swells.

Since the Southern California coastline is all jacked up (uh I mean unique)…we took the forecast and broke it down into a bunch of different “zones” that help to show how much swell, what sort of wind, and how the tides are going to affect the different regions.

WNW-NW swell (280-300) and local WNW windswell will be slowly building on Tuesday…unfortunately shape looks pretty sloppy for most of the day.

Most exposed spots can expect waist-chest high surf for the morning…the standout NW facing breaks will have more chest-shoulder high surf with some inconsistent head high sets on the am tide push.

Shapewise the onshore wind is going to be the biggest problem…but the high mid-morning tide isn’t going to do us any favors either. Look for cleanest conditions early in the morning…and then bumpy, choppy, shape from mid-morning on.

W winds are supposed to get an early jump on things…starting off around 10-12 knots for the morning and then quickly building into the 12-20 knot range by the afternoon. Patchy fog and cooler air temps will also be on tap throughout the day.

New WNW-NW swell (285-300), some small SW swell (200-220), and, later in the afternoon, new local WNW-NW windswell will be on the rise through Monday.

During the morning we can expect North LA to be in the knee high range at the average spots with a few waist-chest high waves showing at the better winter breaks. By the afternoon, after the tide drops out, look for some more waist-chest high surf at the average NW facing breaks and some shoulder high sets at the standouts.

The South Bay will be more in the waist-chest high+ range at the average spots for the morning. The standout NW facing breaks will be in the chest-shoulder high range at the start of the day. All spots will continue to have some swampy tide issues but you should still be able to find a few peaks in spots where the sand is shallow. By the afternoon the average spots will be more in the shoulder-head high range while the standouts see some inconsistent head high+ sets…shape won’t be the best thanks to building winds, but the new size will be buried out there in the chop.

Look for light winds…mostly variable below 5 knots for the morning. NW winds do start to fill in fairly early…picking up around lunchtime and we can expect them to top out around 13-15+ knots by the afternoon.

The WNW-NW swell (280-300) and the SW swell (195-215) will fade out through the weekend…showing the biggest surf on Saturday…and then getting progressively smaller on Sunday.

On Saturday we can expect surf in the knee to occasionally waist high for most spots, particularly North County breaks. The standout, mostly NW facing and combo spots in the South Bay will be in the waist-chest high range with a few rare plus sets once the tide backs down. Sunday the average spots will basically hold at an inconsistent knee high while the standouts drop to mostly waist high on the bigger waves.

Winds look good for both days…warmer beach temps and NE winds around 10-15 knots for the mornings and 10-15 knot W-WNW winds for the afternoons.

New WNW-NW swell (280-300) and local WNW-NW windswell will be on the rise Friday morning while the SW swell (195-215) continues to slowly fade out. Conditions look OK for the morning…but there will be some Northerly winds blowing pretty early in the day which won’t do most South Bay spots (and on up into Santa Monica) any favors.

North County won’t be able to pick up most of the energy in the WNW-NW swell…but some of it, and the windswell will filter into the well exposed spots. Look for the fading SW swell and shadowed WNW-NW energy to keep most spots in the knee-waist high range with some inconsistent chest high sets showing at the standouts.

The WNW-NW swell will show much better down through the South Bay…look for most exposed spots to be in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets showing at times. The top NW facing breaks will be more in the shoulder-head high+ range with some overhead sets showing on the lower tides…and maybe a few overhead+ sets by late in the afternoon as the windswell continues to increase.

Winds will be mostly light early…but like I said above it looks like they will be light N winds. Expect the winds to be below 10-knots for the morning…with the cleanest conditions showing at the protected areas of North LA. The winds shift WNW-NW around 10-15+20 knots for the afternoon.

The SW swell slowly fades on Thursday while a new mix of NW swell (290-300) and NW windswell build in throughout the day. Unfortunately it looks like onshore winds will start up pretty early…so expect some bumpy shape for the morning and some choppy nastiness by the afternoon.

North County will be in the knee-waist high range for most of the average exposed spots. Standout breaks will see some chest-shoulder high sets.

South Bay will be more in the waist-shoulder high range at the average breaks while the standout combo spots and excellent NW facing spots see some head high sets…maybe even a few bigger ones in the afternoon.

W winds are expected to pick up early…likely coming onshore around 5-8 knots for the morning but building steadily into the 15-20 knot range by the afternoon.

On Saturday the mix of WNW-NW energy will back off a bit more while the S-SW swell continues to pulse in a bit inconsistently. Most exposed spots will be in the knee-waist high range. The top South Bay breaks will be both bigger and more consistent as it pulls in some more NW energy…look for the surf to be more in the waist high+ range at the average spots while the standout breaks see some inconsistent chest-shoulder high sets.

Sunday we get a new WNW-NW swell (285-300) that fills in throughout the day…it isn’t particularly big but it should add a little more “pop” to the surf and help to increase the consistency of the sets. Most spots will hold around waist high…with a couple of plus sets here and there. The standout breaks will be more consistently in the chest-shoulder high range. The S-SW swell trails off a bit…so expect the summer spots to get a little smaller.

Both days look pretty clean during the mornings. Expect light and variable winds for most spots and a few areas with some very light offshore flow. It looks like we will be fighting a bit of a marine layer…maybe even some patchy fog…so don’t be surprised if visibility isn’t always that good. The winds should stay on the light side through the afternoons on both Saturday and Sunday…but expect the sea-breeze to develop enough to driving some variable 10-12 knot onshore flow into the more exposed spots.

The swell mix backs of a bit on Friday as the WNW-NW loses a little bit of energy and the S-SW swell still struggles with inconsistent sets.

North County spots will see a blend of small WNW-NW energy and a little more of the S-SW swell…most breaks will be in the knee-high range with some knee-waist high+ sets at the standout combo spots.

South Bay spots will be in the chest-shoulder high range with some shoulder-head high sets sneaking into the standout breaks.

Look for mostly light and variable winds in the morning with some pockets of light offshore winds here and there. There will be a bit of fog lingering early in the morning but will burn off pretty quickly. Look for variable onshore winds around 10-12 knots for the afternoon.

The WNW-NW swell drops slightly on Thursday while the S-SW swell strengthens a touch more…with waves staying fun for most of the exposed breaks.

North County spots will see a little more size on Thursday…most average breaks will see knee-waist high surf while the top combo spots see some waist-chest high surf.

In the South Bay look for most of the average spots to see surf in the chest-shoulder high range while the standout NW breaks see some shoulder-head high sets sneaking in on the lower tides.

Look for mostly light and variable winds in the morning with some pockets of light offshore winds in a few spots. These winds will hold through mid-morning but then turn westerly around lunch and will eventually peak around 10-15+ knots by late afternoon. Look for cooler beach temps, with some overcast skies and possibly even some fog at times.

The new WNW-NW swell will be peaking on Wednesday…the angle is way too steep for North County…but the South Bay should be able to pull in a good chunk of it. North County spots will see a little more of the S-SW swell but it won’t produce much more than knee-waist high waves at the top spots.

In the South Bay look for most of the average spots to see surf in the chest-shoulder high range while the standout NW breaks see some shoulder-head high+ sets sneaking in on the lower tides. Points and reefs will have the best shape.

Winds and weather look pretty nice again on Wednesday. Mostly sunny skies with some light/variable to light offshore winds on tap for the morning. Variable onshore winds around the 10-14 knot range will develop through the afternoon.

Saturday look for mostly small, tide swamped, surf in the morning. Most spots will be in the knee-waist high range with some chest high+ sets at the standouts. North County spots will be more in the ankle-knee high range with some rare waist high waves at the best windswell spots. W-NW winds will get a jump on things pretty early so expect sloppier conditions moving in by midmorning and just getting worse as we head into the afternoon.

Sunday conditions clean up, though we will still have some tide issues in the morning. We will also see some new WNW-NW swell (285-300) mixing in with the new windswell and a touch of S-SW swell. North County can expect more consistent knee-waist high surf with some inconsistent chest high sets at the best combo spots. Down in the South Bay…wave heights will build into the waist-shoulder high range for most of the exposed spots and chest-head high+ sets at the standouts. Winds will start off light offshore and then shift variable onshore around 10-13 knots for the afternoon.

Just some NW windswell leftovers, background WNW-NW swell, and some inconsistent S-SW swell, on tap for Friday. Look for nearly flat conditions for the morning as we shuffle through the high AM tide. North County spots will stay pretty small with ankle-knee high surf for most spots and some inconsistent waist high sets at the standout breaks.

The South Bay will pull in more of the NW energy and can expect surf in the waist high range for most areas with some chest-high sets at the standouts. Looks biggest in the morning (once the tide drops off)…and then gets smaller through the afternoon as the windswell continues to fade out.

Look for NE winds around 10 knots for the morning with the potential for some 15 knot gusts near the wind-prone passes and canyons. Those winds shift to the W-NW around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

A weak cold front moves through Monday night and helps set up some NW winds for Tuesday. Look for WNW-NW winds around 10-12 knots for the morning and then gusts hitting 15-25 knots by the afternoon.

Steep NW energy, both windswell and some medium period stuff, will push past LA on Monday…a little bit of the energy will make it into the South Bay standouts but it will be pretty small everywhere else. Look for surf in the knee-waist high range for most of the average breaks…maybe even smaller at a few of the really protected spots in North County. The standout NW facing windswell spots will have some waist-chest high+ sets.

Some lighter almost semi-variable conditions setting up along the coast early in the morning but shifting WNW-NW’erly very shortly after sunrise. Expect some residule bump on pretty much everything except the most protected breaks. WNW-NW winds 15-25 knots move in through the afternoon.

On Saturday look for a mix of leftover WNW-NW swell, some new steep NW swell (295-300), and some shadowed SW energy.

Most spots north county spots will be in the knee-waist high range while the standout combo breaks through the South Bay will have some chest-shoulder high sets sneaking into the really exposed spots. Winds will be light through the morning but build out of the SW around 10-20 knots for late in the afternoon and bring in more rain for the evening.

Sunday the storm will still be lingering but it looks like winds won’t be so bad…expect about the same size as Saturday but with a little bit more W-NW windswell creeping into the well exposed spots. Expect light/variable winds for early Sunday and then building NW winds 15-20+ knots for late in the afternoon.

Los Angeles Surf Forecast - for Thursday 3/4/2010

The WNW-NW swell will be on the way down on Thursday…but there will be plenty of energy still sloshing around at the well exposed spots. There will also be a touch of SW swell (200-220) that may sneak some micro-surf into a few of the North County summer breaks. Shape doesn’t look great for most of the county but there may be a few little surf windows at spots protected from the NW winds.

North County spots will be in the chest-shoulder high range with a few inconsistent head high sets showing at the best WNW-NW facing spots. The purely S-facing breaks will be more in the knee high range with some rare waist high+ sets.

South Bay spots will be in the chest-head high range with sets going overhead at the average WNW-NW spots. Standout NW breaks will be consistently shoulder-overhead with sets going a couple of feet overhead.

Winds will be NW around 8-12 knots for the morning, which doesn’t totally blow out everything…I wouldn’t spend a lot of time looking for waves but it could be worth checking those little protected nuggets in the morning. NW winds 15-20 knots will move in through the afternoon.

Saturday starts of slow and breezy thanks to the new storm front pushing through the region and most leftover swell in the water through the early part of the day. Really it will probably be a better morning to surf the pillow for a little longer. Expect S-SW winds 10-15 knots with some 20-25 knot gusts and more rain/thunderstorms and other nonsense.

By Saturday afternoon a new W-NW swell (275-300) starts to arrive and come up fast…though conditions still look pretty crappy. I expect that the average WNW-NW facing spots will be in the shoulder-head high+ range by the end of the day…standout NW facing spots will have more consistent overhead and overhead+ sets.

Sunday the W-NW’er will peak and winds will back down shifting more to the WNW-NW and holding around 10-15 knots for the morning. The surf will be solid in the head high to overhead+ range for most of the average spots (and the good spots in North County) and sets going a few feet overhead to nearly double-overhead and bigger at the WNW-NW facing standouts. The tide is still pretty high in the morning but there will be a lot of energy rolling around and it will have a good shot at breaking through the extra water. Even with the winds there should be enough waves and swell that the more protected breaks will work and will probably be cleaner since they don’t have as much exposure to the wind and chunkiness of the swell.

WNW-NW swell (280-300) and a bit of background SW swell will hold on Friday but lose a little off the top as the swell backs down slightly. Look for the average spots in North County to hold around knee-waist high with some chest-shoulder high sets at the better WNW-NW facing breaks.

South Bay spots will be in the chest-head high range with sets going overhead at the average WNW-NW spots. Standout NW breaks will be consistently shoulder-overhead with sets going a couple of feet overhead once the tide balances out a bit. Watch the high morning tide around sunrise.

South Bay spots will be in the chest-head high range with sets going overhead at the average WNW-NW spots. New W swell arrives on Saturday, peaking in the afternoon and then holding overnight into Sunday. Winds and weather will come along with the swell…but there may be a short pocket of cleaner conditions on tap early Saturday morning.

Sizewise we can expect the North County W facing breaks to see surf in the chest-head high range with some bigger head high+ sets showing as the swell peaks. South Bay spots will see consistent shoulder-overhead+ surf for most spots and some sets going several feet+ overhead at the standout breaks. If winds manage to hold onto the southerly flow that sets up on Friday the South Bay will likely be the best call on Saturday morning.

Saturday morning winds are forecast to be semi-onshore…but the models aren’t really all that certain. There is a chance that we will have S-SE winds early in the morning, so there may be a few pockets of cleaner conditions at the protected spots. Look for W winds 10-20+ knots to develop by Saturday afternoon and hold through most of Sunday. It will be raining both days.

W-WNW wind/storm swell will be filling in on Saturday…coming in around chest-shoulder high for most of the average spots…and most of the top breaks in North County. The South Bay will be more in the shoulder-head high range with sets going a few feet overhead by the end of the day. Shape will be pretty torn up through most of the North Half of the County…but again the South Bay may be ok thanks to the S-SE winds that will blow through the morning…really it will end up being a race between how much the swell can build before the winds shift onshore.

Saturday winds and weather are looking a bit stormy with S-SE winds 10-15 knots showing across the county for the morning and then gusts hitting up around 20-25+ knots for the afternoon. Expect rain and possibly thunderstorms pushing throughout the day.

Sunday the WNW-NW swell and the W-WNW windswell are set to peak. Most exposed spots will be running shoulder-overhead with bigger sets mixing in. Top NW facing breaks will be a few feet overhead and possibly a little bigger at the really exposed spots.

Sunday winds shift more to the WNW around 10-15 knots for the morning and gusts nearing 20-knots for the afternoon. Drier conditions overall but not much in the way of clean surf thanks to the new, lamer, wind direction.

Saturday will see new WNW-NW swell filling in throughout the county but showing strongest through the South Bay (like pretty much every other WNW swell). The tide will swamp things out pretty hard in the morning and there will probably only be a handful of spots that can handle the extra water…look for some chest-head high surf at the breaks that can…maybe a few bigger overhead+ sets at the standout South Bay breaks.

As the tide drops look for more consistent shoulder-head high surf at the average WNW-NW spots…with the standout South Bay breaks seeing sets around the overhead to a couple of feet overhead range…maybe even bigger later Saturday afternoon.

Sunday looks pretty similar to Saturday…same tide issues and everything. Look for more chest-head high surf at the WNW-NW spots and overhead+ (and bigger) surf on tap at the standouts.

Saturday will have sort of funky winds…sort of light and variable in the morning with building onshore flow coming on pretty early and junking it up with 10-15+ knot winds by the afternoon. Sunday looks much cleaner with light to moderate offshore flow in the morning and only variable onshore flow for the afternoons.

The high tide is going to kill surf for most spots through the morning…the dropping WNW-NW energy won’t do us any favors either. Expect a lot of spots to be very mushy and shorebreaky early…but slowly improving as the tide drops. By the time things even out the average W-WNW facing breaks will have knee-waist high sets…while the South Bay standouts see some chest-shoulder high sets.

New WNW-NW swell (280-300) starts filling in later in the day…possibly helping to increase size and consistency a touch as we head toward the end of the day. I am not expecting a ton of new surf before the sun sets, but it will be worth at least giving the top spots some sort of check if the winds seem light.

New WNW-NW swell moves in on Tuesday…hitting most the South Bay but pushing some smaller energy into Northern LA as well.

The swell backs down a touch as we move into Wednesday particularly at spots that need more west in the swell-direction. Look for the average North LA spots to hold around waist-chest high with a few shoulder high sets at times. South Bay breaks will be more in the chest-shoulder high+ range with a few overhead sets still mixing in at the standouts. High tide softness through the morning but winds look light enough that it should stay surfable as the tide drops through the morning.

Light and variable winds on tap for the morning with a little bit of onshore bump here and there. Look for building W-NW winds around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

New WNW-NW swell moves in on Tuesday…hitting most the South Bay but pushing some smaller energy into Northern LA as well.

Average W facing breaks will be in the chest-shoulder high range…with a few head high+ sets sneaking through on the lower tides. The South Bay will be more in the shoulder-overhead range with some bigger sets going a couple of feet+ overhead coming through at the top spots.

Winds will be S-SE around 10-15 knots for the morning…even going a little more ESE at times early on. The South Bay will be pretty clean with these sort of directions, but you will get a little more hack at spots along North LA. Winds go more to the S-SSW late in the day but again the South Bay breaks may remain pretty manageable.

The surf drops but still manages to be playful on the leftover bits of the W-WNW swell. Most spots in North County will continue to stay on the shadowed side…with the W facing breaks seeing waist-chest high+ surf and a few shoulder high sets at the better exposed areas…maybe a touch more size the closer you get to Ventura.

The standout WNW-NW facing spots in the South Bay will be in the shoulder-head high range with a few overhead sets still mixing it up on the better sandbars.

Winds look good for the morning but switch onshore out of the W-WNW around 10-15+ knots for the afternoon. Expect increasing cloudiness throughout the day…with a chance at some more rain/showers moving in on Tuesday.

Saturday looks a bit bumpy in the morning but a few of the more protected spots in North County could be surfable…it looks like the South Bay will have mostly onshore flow through the morning. Still plenty of shoulder-overhead surf on tap for the average W facing spots. Standout breaks will have sets going a few feet overhead and possibly a few bigger ones in the morning.

Sunday looks clean across the board…mostly light and variable to light offshore winds. Look for chest-shoulder high+ surf at the average W-WNW facing spots while the better exposed areas of the South Bay continue to see overhead sets. The standout WNW-NW facing breaks will have some bigger sets going a couple of feet overhead at times. Expect the winds to remain on the light side most of the day, but come onshore a touch more in the afternoon.

W-WNW swell will peak on Friday…though conditions don’t look particularly appetizing. Granted a lot is going to depend on how fast this last storm front moves through the area but at this point it looks like SW winds around 15-20 knots and more rain on tap for the morning. The winds eventually shift more W’erly by the afternoon but that won’t really help things that much. If the front stalls out we could see more SE flow in the morning which would at least set up some cleaner surf at the protected breaks of the South Bay.

Most W facing spots will see consistent overhead to several feet overhead on the surf…maybe a few smaller waves at the more protected points along North County. The South Bay standouts see sets going well overhead to double-triple overhead as well as some inconsistently bigger sets at times.

Overall the storm surf doesn’t look all that fun…but if you are willing to brave the poor water quality, and potentially hazardous surf, you might spend a few minutes checking out spots that can handle the mix of wind/weather/swell.

More storm and more swell continue to pummel us on Thursday. W-WNW swell and junky stormswell will hit exposed areas pretty hard…continuing to push in large sloppy surf and poor conditions. Most W facing spots will see consistent overhead to several feet overhead on the surf…maybe a few smaller waves at the more protected points along North County. The South Bay standouts see sets going well overhead to double-triple overhead as well as some inconsistently bigger sets at times.

S winds, possibly even some SSE winds at times through parts of the South Bay, and rain will be on tap for Thursday…look for winds around 15-25+ knots with gusts around 35-40 knots. Severe weather warnings, flash flood warnings, and all sorts of fun stuff will likely continue to be in effect throughout the day…fortunately it looks like the weather will start to break by the weekend.

Solid W-WNW swell continues to pump through on Wednesday…actually seeing the first part of the swell peak throughout the day (and more on the way for later in the week).

Most W facing spots will see consistent overhead to several feet overhead on the surf…maybe a few smaller waves at the more protected points along North County. The South Bay standouts see sets going well overhead to double-overhead with some bigger bombs filtering through…you know, just to keep things interesting.

Shapewise/Windwise much like Tuesday the South Bay will have the cleanest conditions thanks to the morning’s SE winds, but water quality will not be good…basically all of LA will have just completed a giant toilet flush right into the Santa Monica Bay, which is probably a good reason to skip the session.

Look for SE winds around 15-25+ knots for the morning, along with stronger gusts at the well exposed spots. Rain on tap for the morning as well. S-SSW winds will shift through in the afternoon building into 15-25+ knot range with stronger near 35+ knot gusts as the storm settles in. More rain and a chance for Thunderstorms for the evening/night as well.

Most W facing spots will see consistent shoulder-overhead surf while the South Bay standouts see sets going overhead+ to well overhead at times. Look for more size and consistency to fill in through the afternoon.

Still lots of surf on tap for the weekend despite the dip in WNW energy on Saturday. Sunday will actually come up a touch as a new WNW swell (280-300) comes in to reinforce the first swell.

North County W facing spots will continue to hold around the chest-shoulder high range over both days…along with a few head high (and slightly bigger) sets showing at the standouts.

South Bay spots will continue to be be in the head high to overhead range pretty consistently…with some sets going a couple feet overhead at the standout breaks. With the size dipping down, and the periods shortening up it looks like there might be a few more makeable sections on the right tides.

Weatherwise look for light and variable winds through early Saturday and only marginal onshore flow for the afternoon. Sunday will start out with light/variable winds as well but S-SSE winds and increasingly cloudy skies will move in through the afternoon. Rain will be coming as well but it looks like heavy stuff will start after sundown.

The surf drops a little bit as the W-WNW swell backs off...still there will be plenty of surf. North County spots won’t be as exposed to the swell mix but will still manage to average around the chest-shoulder high range at many of the better positioned breaks…maybe even a few head high sets at the spots that do better at pulling in the W-WNW swells.

South Bay spots will be in the head high to overhead range pretty consistently…with some sets going a few feet overhead (and maybe bigger) at the standout breaks. Overall not as much juice as Thursday but still a lot of closeouts (it is the South Bay after all) at the beach breaks. Points and reefs will have the best shape.

Look for clean conditions with E winds around 10-15+ knots for the morning and some gusts near 20+ knots near passes and canyons. It will be pretty chilly in the morning but hopefully it will warm up through the middle of the day. Look for light and variable winds through the afternoon…likely keeping things pretty surfable throughout the day.

The solid W-WNW swell continues on Thursday…with plenty of energy showing throughout the county, but with a huge chunk of it walling up most of the South Bay. Winds won’t do us any favors either…NW flow around 10-15 knots will be on tap through the morning, likely setting up some sideshore flow for N. LA and side-onshore (or straight onshore) winds for the South Bay.

Sizewise the W facing North County spots will continue to be in the shoulder-head high range with some sets going a couple of feet+ overhead, particularly through the lower afternoon tides. Like I said in yesterday’s forecast…if you are looking for smaller surf, you might check out breaks that are normally more of a summertime thing…there will probably be a few fun ones sneaking in.

The South Bay will continue to see some solid size…the W-WNW facing breaks will be consistently overhead to well overhead once the swell gets established in the afternoon. The standout spots will see waves going several feet overhead to double overhead and bigger at times.

The winds are set to improve by the end of the day…gradually shifting to the N or even NNE by the evening, so keep an eye on conditions…there is a chance for some clean-up around sunset. Hope you guys get a few…stay safe!

Lots of waves on tap for Wednesday...the new W-WNW swell will be filling in fast through the morning but won’t really peak until later in the afternoon.

North County spots with W exposure will be in the shoulder-head high range with some sets going a couple of feet+ overhead at times, particularly through the lower afternoon tides. It looks like there will be enough energy wrapping around the corners that, if you are looking for smaller surf, you might check out breaks that are normally more of a summertime thing…there will probably be a few fun ones sneaking in.

The South Bay will see some solid size…the W-WNW facing breaks will be consistently overhead to well overhead once the swell gets established in the afternoon. The standout spots will see waves going several feet overhead to double overhead (maybe bigger at times) once the tide evens out. Expect the beach breaks to be lovely walls of death…so points/reefs that can handle the swell will be the best call shapewise.

Light and variable to slightly offshore/sideshore winds set up clean conditions for the morning. Some scattered drizzle and WNW-NW winds around 10-15 knots move in through the afternoon.

South Bay breaks will have a lot more direct exposure to this swell mix and we can expect a big jump in size as you move down the coast. Average spots through the South Bay will be shoulder-overhead on the sets while the standout breaks pull in some bigger sets that hit the several feet overhead range. Shape will be pretty walled and closed out but there may be something to break up the swell a bit if you hunt around.

Winds look good with light offshore flow on tap for the morning…maybe even moderately offshore near some of the passes and canyons. Look for the winds to increase and shift a little more onshore through the afternoon before possibly laying down again near the sunset.

The swell fills in overnight and will drive up wave heights throughout the county as we head into Saturday...Sunday though will be the biggest day as another swell mixes in with the first one.

Up in North County...the swell will be West enough to push some new waves into the region. On Saturday look for most breaks to build into the chest-shoulder high range with some bigger inconsistent overhead waves showing at the better winter spots out near the edge of the county. By Sunday the average spots will be more consistently in shoulder-head high surf. The standouts will see consistent shoulder high to overhead waves with sets going a couple of feet overhead at times.

The South Bay has some really good exposure to these two swells so expect the majority of the energy to hit down that way. On Saturday average spots will be in the shoulder-overhead+ range…maybe a plus now and then on the better parts of the tide swing. The top breaks will be running head high to a couple of feet overhead pretty consistently with some sets going well overhead. By Sunday the average breaks jump up into the head high to a couple of feet overhead range…top spots see well-overhead surf with some occasional double-overhead bombers mixing in. Shape at the beach breaks isn’t going to be great lots of closeouts ( I know, I know…Really there will be closeouts in the South Bay? Wow there is a newsflash Adam)…so it might be worth hunting around to find something that can break out a corner here and there.

Winds look good…mostly light offshore for the mornings and just a light/variable onshore pushing through in the afternoons. Good chance for those winds to lay down as the sun sets.

New swell will be coming up in the morning…not showing a ton of new size early but increasing pretty steadily as the swell fills in.

North County spots will be smaller with lots of knee-waist high+ waves coming through at the average breaks. Best W exposed spots will be more consistently in the waist-chest high+ range on the sets. Look for all of the spots to fill in a bit more through the afternoon…I wouldn’t be surprised to see some head high waves at the best breaks by the end of the day.

South Bay spots will be a lot more exposed to the swell…but they still won’t have a ton of size coming through early in the day. For the morning look for chest-shoulder waves at the average W-WNW facing spots and some chest-head high waves at the best breaks. By the afternoon most spots will be running chest-head high+ with the standouts going a couple of feet overhead.

Winds look good…mostly light offshore for the morning and then light/variable to light onshore for the afternoon. Chance for some patchy fog too but most of it will likely hold off the coast until the winds start to shift around in the afternoon.

Our surf looks pretty weak through the morning…mostly leftover energy with some weak S-SW swells still struggling in from the Southern Hemi. The small, but rideable WNW swell mix will hold into Wednesday. The surf won’t be “all-that” but it should be fun in the right spots. North County breaks will be pretty small…mostly breaking in the ankle-knee high range with a few knee-high sections at the better winter beaches. South Bay breaks will be in knee-waist high range with some waist high+ sets now and then. Tuesday looks surfable…but only really through the South Bay. North LA is pretty shadowed from the WNW energy and the weak S-SW swells haven’t been showing very well either (so I am not expecting that to change tomorrow). Look for mostly flat to about knee high surf through the average North County spots…maybe a few waist highers sneaking through at the spots that like the windswell.

South Bay breaks will be in the waist-chest high range on the lower morning tides…again nothing huge but still a bit more rideable than other areas. The top South Bay breaks will be in the waist-chest occasional shoulder high range…particularly by the afternoon and we can expect more consistency out of the bigger sets by late in the day.

Still plenty of waves on tap for the South Bay tomorrow…North LA will have a few rideable areas but for the most part is going to miss out on a lot of the action.

Look for the N. LA spots to be in the knee high to knee-high+ range off the mix of weak S-SW swells. A few of the better W-WNW facing breaks will be more in the knee-chest high range…maybe even a few inconsistently bigger sets on the lower tides.

South Bay breaks will average around waist-shoulder high with a few chest-shoulder high+ sets sneak into the best exposed spots. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few bigger sets through the early morning tide push but expect them to drop off (and be swamped out) but the building tide and dropping swell.

The Swell
Saturday starts off with some new WNW-NW swell (280-300) starting to show early in the day but not getting a ton of new size on the beach for the morning. The WNW-NW builds in through Saturday afternoon and peaks throughout the day on Sunday. Small, much less consistent, SW energy (200-220) holds in the background.

Waves
Saturday will start off a little slow through the early morning…but the new swell will be just starting to show. Still we will have enough energy from the previous swell for the average spots to hold on to waist high+ sets, while the standouts in the South Bay see some chest-shoulder high+ waves. Look for bigger and more consistent surf to fill in through the afternoon, likely putting some head high+ sized sets in before dark.

The WNW-NW’er peaks on Sunday with consistent chest-head high surf at the average exposed breaks. Top NW facing spots…again mostly in the South Bay will have shoulder-head high+ surf fairly consistently and sets going a couple of feet overhead at times. Looks like points and reefs will have the best shape but expect smaller less consistent sets in those areas.

Winds
Variable S-SE winds move through LA on Saturday morning…mostly light but swirling around enough to push some bump in the more exposed areas. Building NW winds 10-15+ knots move in through the afternoon.

Sunday look for light and variable to light offshore winds early in the morning. Lighter winds through midday…and then building NW winds 10-15+ knots for the afternoon.

The mix of WNW-NW swell (280-300 but with more energy in the 290-300 range) and some weak SW swell (200-220) will back down on Friday. Look for the biggest, most consistent surf through the morning and further shrinkage by the afternoon.

The surf backs down a bit on Friday…average spots drop into the knee-waist high range…with some chest high sets at the better NW facing breaks. Look for the top NW facing spots, mostly in the South Bay, to pull in chest-shoulder high waves with a few head high sets still sneaking in through the early morning. Shape will be a bit walled…but you might find an occasional corner off the well-groomed sandbars or structures that can help break up the swell.

A new mix of WNW-NW swell (280-300 degrees but with the main push of energy around 290-300) will fill in throughout the day. Small SW swell (200-220) will also increase slightly in the background. Look for most spots to start small (and tide swamped) but expect more size to arrive as the swell fills in more in the afternoon.

Waves
There will be a little bit of new WNW-NW energy showing in the morning but I think it is going to have a lot of trouble breaking through the early morning high tide. Expect more ankle-knee high lines through the morning. A few of the South Bay breaks see some waist-high+ shorebreak through the first part of the day.

By the afternoon as the tide drops and the swell increases we can expect the average WNW-NW facing spots to be in the waist-chest high+ range while the standout South Bay spots see some chest-shoulder high+ surf. The best breaks may have some head high+ sets arriving right around sundown…but more of the energy will be arriving after dark.

The Swell
WNW-NW windswell will peak into early Saturday, fade slightly through midday and then increase again in the afternoon. Look for the windswell (and a small SW swell) to fade through the day on Sunday.

Waves
Saturday will see swampy morning shape as the high tide peaks right at the dawn patrol…and by the time the tide drops the winds will get on it…so if you couldn’t tell the surf doesn’t look all that fun. Wave heights will hold around knee-waist high at the average spots while the standout South Bay breaks see some chest-shoulder high sets.

By Sunday we will still have to power through the morning high tide…but overall conditions will improve…hopefully staying clean long enough for the tide to drop. Look for more knee-waist high waves on Sunday…standout breaks will be in the chest high range…maybe a little bigger, but fading as the windswell and the tide drop.

Winds
Saturday will see variable onshore flow for the morning…mostly below 10-knots but starting to get some texture on the water early (if it ever lets up from Friday night). Look for NW winds around 10-20 knots for the afternoon.

A smaller NW swell (290-300) and a new SW swell (200-220) will start us off on Saturday morning. A bigger, more consistent, NW swell (285-300+) will start to show some new long-period energy as it begins to fill in through the day…and maybe even a few bigger waves at the well exposed spots by the late afternoon. The NW’er eventually peaks overnight into Sunday where it will hold throughout the day.

Saturday we can expect mostly knee-waist high waves at the average spots for the dawn patrol. The standout combo spots and the best NW facing breaks in the South Bay will have some inconsistent bigger sets around chest-shoulder high for the morning. The new NW’er will add a little size and consistency as the tide drops during the afternoon…though it looks like most of the energy will arrive after sundown.

Sunday the NW’er will peak, with the majority of the energy showing through select spots in the South Bay…we will also have a ok background shot of SW swell (200-220) that will keep the SW facing breaks from being totally shut off. The average breaks, in both sides of the county, will be in the waist-chest high range…with some shoulder-head high sets at the breaks with a bit more NW exposure. The standout NW facing spots in the South Bay will be in the shoulder-high to overhead range pretty consistently…with some sets going a couple of feet overhead at times.

Winds
Winds look ok for both days…sort of light/variable to light SE’erly in the mornings and moderately onshore out of the W-WSW around 10-15 knots by the afternoons.

LA County will see a mix of fading NW swell (290-300) showing in the South Bay, some weak SW swell (200-220) blipping some minor sets into North County, and some building onshore WNW-NW windswell that will push a few new lumps into exposed areas by the afternoon.

Look for the biggest size at the NW facing spots, (so mostly the South Bay), despite the dropping swell. Average spots throughout the county will be in the knee high range with a few knee-high+ sets sneaking into the ok exposed combo spots on the lower tides. The standout NW facing breaks and top combo spots will be a little more in the knee-waist high range with some rare chest high sets showing at times. High tide is going to be an issue by midmorning…so expect shape to flatten out almost everywhere as it peaks around 9am.

Winds
Look for light and variable conditions early…but with a touch of onshore flow picking up by midmorning. Generally it will be clean but with a couple of pockets of texture building in at the really wind exposed areas, particularly around the areas of patchy fog that will roll through.
